Everything you need to know before driving abroad
An IDP is a translation of your national driving license. It allows you to drive legally in many countries and helps avoid issues with local authorities.
The IDP is issued under the framework of international agreements such as the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic and the earlier 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. These conventions establish common standards for road traffic rules and mutual recognition of driving permits among the participating countries. It’s important to check the requirements of the country you plan to visit to ensure your IDP will be valid.
To obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) in the United States, you must apply through one of the two authorized organizations: AAA (American Automobile Association) or AATA (American Automobile Touring Alliance). These are the only entities authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs.
You can apply either by mail or in person at your local AAA office. Applying in person is usually faster and more convenient if you have a nearby AAA branch. If you apply by mail, include all required documents and payment, and allow approximately 2 to 3 weeks for processing and delivery.
If you’re a U.S. resident outside the country, you can apply for an IDP remotely through AAA’s dedicated online application portal. Processing and international mailing usually take 3 to 6 weeks, so this method isn’t suitable if you need an IDP immediately at a car rental counter.
Nevertheless, applying through AAA online remains the only official way to get a real IDP while abroad.
There are unofficial services that promise faster delivery of IDPs, but they usually cost a lot more than the official ones. These documents aren’t officially recognized, so there’s a legal risk — but many travelers say these permits have helped them rent cars and avoid trouble while abroad.
If you decide to go this route, make sure you understand the risks and take full responsibility. The most important thing is to pick a service with good reviews and real feedback, because some shady sites might take your money and never send anything.
Sometimes, when there’s no other option, this might be the only way — just be careful and choose wisely.
